5 Weeks Along - 6/17/2006
I'm officially 5 weeks pregnant today. Of course, this doesn't mean that the baby is 5 weeks along. One thing I've learned about pregnancy is that nobody can fully agree on how to calculate anything related to time and pregnancy. For instance, pregnancy can be calculated based on the last menstrual period (LMP) or based on estimated date of conception (EDC) or based on early ultrasounds which use actual measurements of the baby to determine gestational age.
If that weren't confusing enough, due dates are even more confusing. As soon as I found out I was pregnant with Baby Farnsworth #2 last Saturday (6/10/2006), I went online to look for due date calculators. Based on my LMP, I got 3 different due dates, February 14, 2007 (Kent's birthday), February 17, 2007, and February 20, 2007. Which one is right? Who knows? The 2/14 date took into account my LMP and the length of my cycle, 25 days. The 2/17 date took into account my LMP only, but used a complicated algorithm to calculate my due date. The 2/20 date used the more common method of calculating 40 weeks from your LMP.
My family doctor, Dr. Lamb, who used to be an OB, said my due date was 2/20/2007, so for now we'll go with that. He did add, however, that based on my history of preeclampsia, I'd probably deliver the baby in January 2007. Wouldn't it be funny if this little one were born on Maija's birthday? What are the chances? Either way, we'll have 3 Farnsworth birthdays within weeks of each other.
How I'm Doing
---------------
So far I'm doing a lot better than I did when I was pregnant with Maija. I do have nausea and exhaustion, but I'm not throwing up yet. I didn't really start throwing up with Maija until I was about 7 or 8 weeks along, so we'll see in a week or two how I'm doing. I'm optimistic, though, that I'll be able to handle the morning sickness a little better this time.
How The Baby's Doing
-----------------------
At 5 weeks the baby is the size of a garbanzo bean. The heart has started beating, and the brain has started developing. This is the time when the baby looks like a little alien. By about 9 weeks, the baby actually begins to look like a baby.

I think this is a great idea, Kim! Blogging can be so fun. I've already written more in my blog than I do in most of my practice exams. Sad.
I thought you'd find this interesting-- a woman who is studying for the bar who has had a couple kids already said that studying for the bar is like being pregnant.
So... maybe we're in the same emotional boat!
Have fun with your alien garbanzo bean!
(I meant that she had the kids already-- not that she said it already. That wasn't very clear, was it?)
